I look more like Roy Nelson than Kimbo Slice but I still want to train. As a beginner should I lose some weight before signing up so I do not embarrass myself and hold the class back?

You'll lose weight in class as long as you push yourself. I would never skip physical exercise in order to get in better shape. You know?
I know you posted this thread a while ago but I hope you see this and take my advice.

You will lose more weight than you ever have thought about if train and do the excersise necessary to get in shape for it. Never hurts to start running ahead of time so that you can get the most out of the classes and spend less time in the bathroom puking LoL
Good Luck and take Prophets advice, he's done very well for himself since reprting his progress here a couple years ago
